India 3rd top recycler and consumer of plastic

Check out the story:
http://marketplace.publicradio.org/display/web/2007/05/25/indias_plastic_plague/

"In the U.S., towns squabble over who will have to absorb all this plastic. But in India they want the stuff. Dealers here buy plastic from all over the world, especially Europe and the U.S. Then guys like Vinod sort it out by color and quality and resell it to factories, who restyle it into new plastic stuff. So this market is the heart of India's recycling industry. In the U.S., only about 10 percent of plastic gets recycled. But in India more than half is reused.

And here's the thing: There's no government recycling program in India. This is all ad-hoc small businessmen."
"ANITA AHUJA: 'I mean, we are the third, now, the biggest manufacturers and consumers of plastic. First is America, second is China, third is India. And our middle-class population is increasing so there's going to be much more consumption of plastic
It's really sad — I mean, for the drains, for the river. I mean, the world has produced enough plastic, and now we should not produce anymore. And we should recycle, because the plastic cannot be destroyed. "
crazy..
we really should demand that these companies stop producing plastic and reuse what is already there. theres moreeeeeeee than enough plastic to meet anyones needs.

NEW INDIA TRIBE

Since I was thrown out of the biggest group about India on tribe and my posts have been censored there, I’m starting a new India tribe where there is freedom of speech. All who are interested in India and who wan to participate in civil discourse are welcome. I’ve posted the article that was censored at the other tribe as the first article in the new tribe.

This is a group where people are free to talk about Indian politics, culture, travel, and wildlife.

All seems to surreal and I havent been able to digest what I went through the lasts few days but here i am. Have lived to tell the tale. I dont go much to the city center and made an exception when invited by a friend for dinner on my birthday. In Colaba. In Cafe Leopold where the first shootings in Mumbai took place. I am a regular at Leos on weekends and always sit downstairs. That day it was more packed then usual, so the manager who recognised me came over and asked me to wait upstairs in the a.c floor. I agreed and 2 pints later I went to the washroom, thats when i heard the shots. Well then i was preety sure it were fireworks being india. But the sudden silence, its really noisey downstairs otherwise, with only the shots from an ak47 and glass breaking and all. So everyone by then had ducked down. Bullets came in through the tainted glass windows, so no one dared to look down. People started crawilng, heading for any space they could find, the tiny kitchen, washroom and even the storeroom. This was really happening. Leos was known for drug trafficers and shady characters in the 80s and 90s. Lots of nigerians were banned to enter Leos. So I did think it was a gang thing at first. No idea what was awaiting the city. The rampage continued for about 15 minutes and then no one came for the next 30 min, although it seemed like an eternity that time. We had barricaded the door downstairs with a table so when the Squad arrived they almost shot me again tring to explain that all was well and we just want to come out. The Leos awaiting me downstairs was beyond anything I could imagine. All the tables were turned and bodies drenched in blood. A women screaming for an ambulence with her husband lying unconscious next to her. I went out where the police was. A friend who was with us, lived nearby and asked me to come there. I just wanted to go home, but that plan changed as i heard minutes later from a taxi driver that there had been a shooting spree in the Victoria Terminus Station. I went to my friends place, heard more shots around that place. Little did we know about the hostages held in the Nariman House was only two blocks away from the appartment I was staying. I could see the dome of Taj Mahal in flames from the balcony and the Nariman House from the terrace. In fact the view was so good that it was the favourite spot for most journalists and cameramen who grew in numbers the following day. I am still in Colaba and hopefuly will be returning home today. I just saw earlier on T.V that the terrorists were already in Leos, when we arrived, they were having their dinner. My story seems like a joke hearing and seeing what others have been through. We still dont know what can happen in the next few days so it doesnt feel right to be hopeful yet. Anyway this was long story short. I am fine. And feel I had good stars that night. Lets pray for all the victims, martyrs and the injured. Will never celebrate my b`day. Ever. Deep

2008 Tantric Tour through the Heart of India

"India is not a country but a mystery. A mystery of a rising lotus as chaste as the morning dew, delicate and sublime. India is the immanent and the transcendental manifested simultaneously leaving deep feelings of wonder and amazement, just as those experienced by a child. So distant and high as the Himalayas and as close and as near as our breath, ethereal like the rainbow and yet so real and alive." - OSHO: from India my Love

Come with me this year to discover Mother India in all her exoticism and learn ancient Tantra along the way. I'll be teaching some different aspect of Tantra most days on our tour of India. Imagine us doing some ancient breath technique together as the sun rises on the Taj Mahal. We'll even do sacred ritual at one of the temples in Khajuraho! What could be better?

The Heart of India Tour is Nov 19 – Dec 1. If you‘ve always wanted to go to India and just would not go by yourself or if you’d like to go and be part of a Tantric learning environment as we travel, this tour may be the thing for you. You will experience shifts in being on a daily basis. India does that to you.

Tour Highlights:
•	Discover the spiritual wealth of four major faiths: Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism and Jainism
•	See the amazing Taj Mahal at dawn
•	Explore Jaipur the Pink City and ride on elephant back to the famed Amber Fort
•	Visit the Kama Sutra Temples of Kahjuraho
•	Perform Puja at the holy lake in Pushkar
•	Attend Hindu prayer ceremony at the ghats along the Ganges River
•	Experience amazing Saranath where Buddha gave his first speech after attaining enlightenment
…and much more

Your cost for the tour is $2200. This includes all hotel accommodations, meals, ground transportation, in India flights, train, bus and entrance to all monuments. It does not include air travel to India, shopping, tips or alcoholic beverages. In planning the first tour in 2006, I found that travel agents could not get special deals on airfare so I decided to let you use your own mileage and rewards to select the type of travel you would want to India. You must act fast since then airlines are steadily raising their prices.

I am limiting the number of people to 16 so if you want to go, you must let me know as soon as possible. Please let me know if you are even thinking about it. And you must get to Delhi on November 19th. The actual tour starts on the morning of the 20th.
India in September? (Indian newbie question)

I'm invited on my first trip to India to attend a wedding in Delhi the first week of September. I very much want to travel to Kerala and Goa after that (second week of September). Is there any way the rain may be over by then? One of my traveling companions is from Delhi, but he doesn't know much about southern India and its weather.

Journey Of The Turtle is the full-length debut from Ekoplex (Ray Vincent), one of Canada’s most well-respected psytrance producers. Infused with an original style and unmistakable energy, this album flows through dark and driving techtrance, quirky melodic full-on, and richly atmospheric progressive to arrive at an inspiring downtempo finale. Versatile and unconventional, Journey Of The Turtle is designed to flourish in a wide variety of settings, from the festival dance floor to your home stereo. To ensure the best possible sound quality, this album has been mastered by Tim Schuldt at 4CN Studios, Germany.

Hi,

I'm thinking about coming to India for some weeks in June/July.
I've been to Manali/Vashisht 10 years ago and there were lots of
parties during that time (fullmoon, short before the pass to Ladakh opens).

I really liked Vashisht, but I could see lots of building-activities going on.

How is the situation nowadays? Is the magic gone? Or is it still worth it.
I'd really like to hear some opinion of people who know the place from
10 (or more) years ago and can compare...

Greetings, Lars.

Big Chill festival in Goa...anybody?

Anybody from here headed for the Big Chill festival in Goa on 14/15 April?
http://www.bigchillindia.in/

lineup
The bands and DJs performing at The Big Chill bring breath-taking live performances and record collections to envy from global stars and local heroes, including:

Coldcut
From cut-up remixing to live visual mixing, Coldcut first exploded onto the cutting edge of dance music in the 80s, and they are still there. 2006's 'Sound Mirrors' album - including collaborations with Roots Manuva and Robert Owens, proved that they continue to innovate. Their live show is an audio visual extravaganza that has circled the world several times over the last 12 months - including a spectacular set at The Big Chill 2006.
www.coldcut.net

Norman Jay
Uniquely among DJs, Norman Jay has been honoured by Queen Elizabeth II with an MBE - in recognition of his service to music in the UK. At The Big Chill's festival at Eastnor, Norman's Sunday afternoon set, is a traditional highlight of the weekend - with soul, hip hop, house, drum and bass fusing to bring Good Times.
www.normanjay.com

Jose Padilla
A familiar name everywhere, Jose Padilla has exported his beautiful, mellow Cafe del Mar sound all over the world - through hugely popular compilation albums and with DJ appearances worldwide.
www.josepadilla.info

The Bays
The Bays do not record. The Bays do not rehearse. What The Bays do is play brilliantly improvised dance music live. Performance is the product. Taking the rhythms of hip hop, house music and drum and bass as their starting point, these four musicians create a continous soundscape, telepathically changing the mood at the flick of a beat. The Bays have stunned festival and concert goers worldwide, creating music completely of the moment and collecting fans through shows throughout the UK and worldwide.
www.thebays.com

Hexstatic
When DJs mix videos instead of records, it's feast for the eyes, the ears and the dancing feet. Hexstatic collide classic videos with beats from right now, making switched on audiences dance to Abba, the sound of trees being chopped down, or whatever other ammunition they decide to load into their dancefloor-aimed audio-visual missiles.
www.hexstatic.tv

Tom Middleton
Jedi Knight Tom Middleton's productions as Global Communications and Amba have enchanted chill-out audiences all over the world, while his DJ sets range from blissed out beauty, through cheeky cover versions to dancefloor-shaking beats.
www.tommiddleton.com

Sheila Chandra
As a teenager Sheila formed the band Monsoon, and created a fusion of Western (synthpop) and Indian pop styles. Chandra went on to release a number of albums in the 1980s, at times experimenting with her voice as an instrument through a range of techniques. In the 1990s she released three albums on Peter Gabriel's Real World label. Since 1992 she has shifted from the Indian-Western fusion of synthesizer-centered pop to styles that draw on British and Irish traditional singing traditions. A much-respected performer on the world music scene and remains active into the 21st Century, performing the song 'Breath Of Life' on the Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers soundtrack.
www.sheilachandra.com

Shri
Bombay bred Shri (Shrikanth Sriram), of Badmarsh and Shri fame, has been a main light in the UK Asian Music Scene since it first came to prominence in the early 1990’s. Shri trained as a classical tabla player, from a very early age. He turned tradition on its head by adapting his innovative feel for percussion to other instruments notably his self-made fretless bass and the Indian bamboo flute. Using his Tabla techniques he quickly developed a totally unique style of slapping and coercing the most haunting and funky sounds from a bass that combined the visual gravitas of a sitar with the reverberant voice of the bowed Indian Sarangi, establishing a reputation as a unique multi-instrumentalist and performer. His curiosity and constant search for something new and interesting has led his career and experiences to be extremely diverse. These are absorbed in his compositions, rolling drum and bass, sublime filmic trances and funky grooves, which travel the length and breadth of deepest India to deepest South London. Truly new music.
www.shri.co.uk

Mad Professor
Deep and heavy dubbed out sounds are the Mad Professor's trademark. Perhaps best known for the Massive Attack remix project 'No Protection', Mad Professor picked up the baton from Jamaican studio legends like Lee Perry and King Tubby, working the mixer and effects as a musical instrument.
www.ariwa.com/

Chilled By Nature
Pete Lawrence's Chilled by Nature project is the fruit of ten years work, bringing together some of the UK's best musicians to create 2006's dream-like album 'Under One Sun'. With songs conceived and created in London, Egypt and the Greek Islands, the Big Chill's founder fuses the many elements at the core of The Big Chill into a blissed-out sunshine sound, both in the studio and on stage.
www.chilledbynature.net

Ben Mynott
Fluidnation founder, ex-Fragile Stater and a leading light on the UK chill out scene, Ben's radio shows, journalism and compilations all show him to be one of the leading purveyors of enchanting, mellow music. Ben himself describes his sound as "just. beatiful. music." - and he's right!
www.myspace.com/benmynott

Eva Abraham
Big Chill Recording's Eva Abraham has the voice of an angel and songs that come from the heart. Simple, acoustic arrangements convey her heartfelt lyrics - anyone who sees her perform falls in love with the songs and the performer.
Lol Hammond
Lovely Lol Hammond knows how to move different parts of audience's bodies, their feet with dancefloor-targeted DJ sets, and their hearts with beatiful solo piano performances - Lol has been with The Big Chill since the very earliest of times, and recently has established himself in the British film industry as music supervisor on some of the UK's most successful films. He is - to use his own, favourite word - a 'corker'.
Jon Hopkins
Jon Hopkins is on the ascendant. His productions have made some of the biggest names in the music industry sit up and listen, and his live performances have been a tour de force at The Big Chill's London venues. Uplifting and cinematic, with soaring melodies and a sound that touches everyone who hears it.
Sapthaakshara
Sapthaakshara, which means seven in Sanskrit, features seven experienced and well-travelled virtuoso musicians who delve deep into the seven-syllable system, which for some is at the very heart of the cyclical nature of time itself.
Laura B
The fantastic Laura B hails originally from France, but now resides in London. In addition to bringing the best of French music to London at the paris-london.org events, Laura is a respected producer and live performer in her own right - working on many of The Big Chill's releases, and performing at the festival, and releasing music both solo and in collaboration with others.
Alucidnation
Bruce 'Alucidnation' Bickerton is Big Chill Recording's laconic troubadour. Often performing sitting down at his laptop, he not only creates luscious, ambient and electronic soundscapes - he sings songs from the heart, often amidst AV performances accompanied by personal photographs from his life. A touching, heartwarming performer with a unique style that is all his own.
Burt Latino and Mavis
Burt's DJ sets travel the world, picking up music for dancing from every country you can imagine. Vibrant and full of life, the music is accompanied by imagery created and collated by Mavis to create an immersive journey around the world without leaving the dancefloor.

Leggo Beast
Murray Clark, the creator of the fantastically wild electro creature Leggo Beast is not a man to compromise. He is however someone who will make a definitive musical statement. Which is an unusual approach in the electro arena, given the current obsession with remixes, mutations and collaborations. Leggo Beast like some mythical electro beast was born whole. When Murray creates a piece of music he does a selection of mixes and then destroys the ‘parts’. This auto-destructivist stance is about being happy to stop and move on creatively. It takes a certain amount of courage, confidence and clarity to do. It has it’s roots in the tradition of performance and of things being what they are when they happen.
Mixmaster Morris
Mixmaster Morris is synonymous with fantastic music. From his Ninja Tune productions as The Irrisistible Force, and his DJ sets worldwide, Morris has wowed audiences from the UK to Australia and back again, wherever he plays, his encyclopedic knowledge of music lets him pick precisely the right record to play next - whether blissing out thousands of Japanese fans with complete ambience, or driving UK club audiences crazy with the most leftfield of dancefloor sounds.

Nick Luscombe
Broadcaster and DJ-about-town Nick pops up all over London and the UK, introducing club and radio audiences to interesting, leftfield electronic music - in particular from Japan - to a UK, and now Indian, audience.
Bam Bam
Reggae, dancehall, dub, bashment, drum&bass - if it has its roots in Jamaica and it makes you want to dance, Bam Bam's Johnny Clash and Duck will play it. Their New Year's Day set at London's Big Chill Bar is now *the* place end a London New Year's Eve night out and their set at The Big Chill 2006 was received by an adoring crowd.

Pathaan
Pathaan is one of the very few UK based DJ’s to have truly crossed the dance/world divide. Whereas many other world music DJ’s lean nearer to the roots market, Pathaan’s history is steeped in dance culture - a stance that is reflected in his popular ‘left-field’ reviews for DJ Magazine, and his numerous appearances in London, Ibiza, Italy, Madrid, Barcelona, Brazil, Istanbul, New York and many far away spots. Most interesting to lovers of the Asian Underground sound has been his unique and highly absorbing Stoned Asia Music series of compilations, which reflect a personal passion for global chill-out with a sitar twist. Also a growing musical diversity had led to the release of ‘Pathaan’s Small World’; a moniker showcasing the open-minded attitude of his club nights combined with an obsession for seeking out the very latest global platters.
Yam
Yam is one half of YamYam. They have recorded and released music over the last dozen years or so. Initially starting out on Nation Records where Mr Scruff re-mixed the classic single 'The Spectacle' and going on to record for New York label Codek. YamYam have recently fetched up on Big Chill recordings with the single 'Bahama Mama'. Guy is based in Brighton, UK, where he has a radio show called AfroBase on Juice 107.2 FM and on totallyradio.com - He has also runs a long established club night also called AfroBase. Yam explores afrocentric music, blending the sounds of the continent into a dancefloor friendly funky mix. As he says of the music he plays 'this is about great pan African dance music you can bend your knees to'!
Shaair and Func
Music with an intention and root in building a bridge across genres, stereo-types, countries, governments, race, and gender while praising and acknowledging the highest power of all, Love, is the foundation of this duo. Shaa'ir, hailing from a New York City Broadway Stage background, born to immigrant parents from Jammu/Kashmir in the United States, has been around the block in the performance and artist's circuitry, and came to India to flesh out an understanding of her Indian roots. What happened instead was mass-synergy. The western influenced culture of Mumbai, the strong appreciation for soul and rock music, brought her to popular rock icon funcinternational's door step, the well-known producer and guitarist for the Indian rock band, Pentagram. Together they make, Shaa'ir and Func. Poetry funked up to praise love and oneness in the universe and all of it's inhabitants.

Jalebee Cartel
The definition of a band generally invokes the stereotypical image of a couple of people blaring out redundant rhythms and the ubiquitous love ballad. But sometimes all that’s needed is a few good men to spin a traditional concept into something refreshingly new. It’s the incessant bass, screaming arpeggios and piercing percussions that truly define the Cartel. Their sound is all about paying homage to their first love, music, and particularly about an explosive electronic experience. Perhaps IDM or just “electronica” could define the resulting product---but then, it isn’t about neat packaging. It’s about pushing the envelope and fusing influences to create a distinctive brand of urban Indian dance music.

Raghu Dixit
Raghu's music is a seamless amalgamation of Indian ethnic music and sounds from around the world befittingly labeling his music as Indo World Folk Rock. Powerful folksy vocals singing intense lyrics in Hindi, Kannada and English hitting right between the eyes is supported by the strum of an acoustic guitar interwoven with violin and flute melodies suddenly giving way to a surprising pinch of blues and rock guitar, all lying comfortably on a bed of Western, Indian and Arabic grooves.
In his chapter in The Big Chill's book 'Crossfade' AJ says "The early eighties scene started to make it possible to live with an increasingly eclectic record collection. It set scores of people off on audio discovery trips. It opened the sound gates to a whole new world. Music was no longer regimented into pop, rock and disco." Deep involvement with the UK music scene, and a regular fixture at Big Chill events - AJ enthusiasm and knowledge shine through as he hosts stages.

Nettie
Originally from Denmark, but now based in London, Nettie's regular compering session at The Big Chill's Castle stage sees a genuine love for the music blended with brilliant comedy moments to ensure everyone has a brilliant time. Nettie's a great DJ in her own right too - best known for the Daft Pink parties in London.

Dear friends,

In a few weeks, i am going to Rajasthan, where I will be meeting nomad kalbeliya families. We would need clothes for children, especially very small children. So please, if you have anything to give, we would be happy to take it to India. I will be in Paris until January 9th, so for those who live in Paris, somebody from the Organization would come to pick up the staff. And for the others, there is a possibility to send it. And for those who are in India, I will be performing in Delhi (January 10th and 11th) and in Orissa (January 12th) before going to Rajasthan, so if you wish to help, please contact me as soon as possible so that we could meet there.

I wish you all Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Music and dance tour in Rajasthan

MUSIC AND DANCE TOUR IN RAJASTHAN
In the heart of the nomad village
Kalbelya dance workshop with the rajasthani nomad dancers and musicians

JANUARY 14 TO 21, 2008

It has been a long time now since I've started organizing this trip each year and taking to the heart of Rajasthan to meet this extraordinary cast of nomad musicians, dancers and snake charmers living in the Thar desert. They are nomad, each year I have to find their new camp location and it is always a big joy to find it. As always, it is going to be a several days workshop with these dancers and musicians, as always it is going to be a wonderfull human aventure, a warm welcom in their village (a very bi privilege) and of course a small performance improvised only for us. If you want to go back to the origins of Rroma people and their dances, if you want to discover the authentic "world" of Gulabi Sapera, Suwa Devi Kalbelya, Musafir and others, this is a trip to do!

The number of the participants is limited, but there are still a few places left, so if you decide to join us, this is the moment!

To get more information about this trip or see the picture of the one I organized in january 2007, please visit the "Music and dance tours" of my website : www.simonajovic.com

As an Indian student: Could you imagine to op for a barefoot lifestyle?

"Forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet and the winds long to play with your hair." (Kahlil Gibran)

I’m a German but I’ve left Europe for good, living in India for the past seven years. I’m quite an average guy – except for my trademark: I'm always barefoot, all-year-round, wherever I go, whatever I do! Most of my friends have never seen me wearing shoes… For me, being barefoot isn’t just a fashion statement: It’s a lifestyle, a way to express myself. And of course an amazing sensual experience: I can FEEL the ground! Would you wear gloves all-year-round? Nopes! So: Why shoes? Walking barefoot, I’m far more “in touch”, in touch with nature, with Mother Earth… Energy can flow freely, I’m never disconnected. It’s very refreshing and stimulating, and the ecological impact is far less dramatic (erosion!) if I’m hiking without shoes. Somehow I’m more defensive, less aggressive if barefoot. Walking barefoot isn’t only special but also communicative: Travelling a lot I’ve made friends in many countries, explaining why I’m roaming around barefoot!
Coming to India I realized: Many people are going barefoot, all the time and everywhere, not only in rural areas and villages but also in town! Even if you’re staying in a big city – one of those hot-spots of modernization and westernisation: You’ll be unable to spend ten minutes in the streets without spotting a pair of dusty bare feet! And it seems quite obvious to me that living barefoot isn’t a privileged of the poor, especially in the South, especially in cities like Chennai. But I wonder: What about the educated youth – students, university graduates? Has anyone of you chosen to go barefoot ‘cause it’s more comfortable, healthy and relaxing, ‘cause it’s cool or just fun?

Label Description : Sonic Tantra Records is psychedelic trance label based in India. It is a group of global artists who believe in pushing the edges of the consciousness into magical dimensions using hyper active sonic crafts. The label was founded in 2006 by Sid aka aGh0Ri TanTriK, with the sole intention of pushing the techniques and styles of psytrance into new possibilities! Highly influenced by this company of artists, the objective was to achieve an artistic trance like state where the spirits are joined to become one! This ensures that an energetic change in reality takes place, just like the ancient "Tantra" related rituals and practices. Finally Sonic Tantra releases and artists are banging in the psyscene and creating some very groovay tunage!

CONCERT FOR INDIA'S ENVIRONMENT FILM

Friends,
I'd like to share the film I have just finished.
It blends footage from a series of multimedia concerts recorded live at the Bharati Vidyapeeth Institute of Environmental Education and Awareness (BVIEER), Pune, India in 2004 with:
*Poems on nature, composed and read by Indian schoolchildren
*Interviews with environmentalists and educators
*Stunning footage of scenery, wildlife and peoples from all over India.
It aims to evoke feelings of reverence for the wonders of India’s nature, and respect for the peoples who have lived alongside them and preserved so much of them over countless generations.
It is inspired by Osho's words from 'The Path of the Mystic' #34
"The new humanity will have an ecology in which nature is not to be conquered but lived and loved. We are part of it - how can we conquer it?"
You can view the film on

Dear India lovers,

I came across Agama Yoga very recently. Their web-site www.agamyoga.com seems rather resonating with what I want to learn.
But I would like to hear of any experiences any of you might have had with Agama Yoga?
Did you take any courses with them?
Do you know Swami Vivekananda Saraswati??

Any information on this would be great as I am assessing doing a 2 month intensive with them......

Thanks so much......

Hello of Seattle US wonderful people! I just found this tribe so thought to join, as i am soon on my way. :)

I am planning on setting sail towards India by Holi thru Banglore for a nice party (as posted via isratrance). I, as well am looking for some DJ gigs to pick up around the area. I have been hosting and putting energy towards the trance for the past..., well since i was born..., tho realistically 8 years. I have some mixes available on my website @ www.molecular.cc

Though, my most recent mix is not posted..so here is the meta-link for your ears special ;)
www.molecular.cc/temp/wate...ticle2.mp3

i tend more on the deep tribal side of things..but sometimes can get a little funky depending on the timing of it all.., hehe, but generally kinda crazy. ticking at the brain....

ok! well im off! in thailand at the moment but soon to be soon!!

love & light,

Dear tribemates,

Does anyone know/can recommend an ayurvedic clini in New Delhi which offers a Panchakarma treatment?
I found one run by Dr.Raju (Maharishi Ayurveda Arogyadham). Anyone had any experience with them?

Muchas gracias
Kali

My daughter and I are going to India. We will be staying at Amma's ashram in Kerala. This is our first time out of the states so I am a bit nervous...along with excitement and anxiousness.
I have been told that there is a good goa/psytrance community in India. I would love to meet up with some folks while there to hit the scene. It would be awesome to hang out with fellow burners too.
I would love any info anyone can give me on: where to eat, places to hang out, places to see, how to travel, ...just anything that would be cheap!!!
Live, love, and burn!
Namaste,

Hello all India lovers,

I am very much in india during the KM this time. What a coincidence as I was in CA last 11 years and never coinicided my trips to India with KM. And this time it has just fallen in place. That too, Allahabad in closer to Delhi which is where I will be.

This makes me feel, this time is meant for me to go. But I know that its a mad rush, the craziest rush ever.
So wondering any of you are going to the KM and where you might be staying etc etc.

Any hints, groups going there etc etc will help me decide how and when to plan my visit to the KM.
Maybe we will meet there, who knows.

Namaste
Bhawna

terror scare in goa??

it seems like every season there is some big rumor about a foreign attack on goa during the christmas/NYE week. i've seen armed guards on beaches, etc. Nothing ever comes of it so i usually scoff at the rumors.

however this one could be more substantiated since it's in print.
what do you think of this??
Israelis warned not to go to Goa, India

Thousands of Israelis visiting the popular Indian resort of Goa, many of them freshly out of the army, have been urged to return home immediately amid warnings of an al-Qaida terrorist plot.

The security warning for all Israelis traveling in and around Goa was issued on Wednesday by the Foreign Ministry and the Counter-Terrorism Division of the National Security Council. The statement said the warning was based on intelligence information of a specific al-Qaida threat against tourists.

"As part of the existing al-Qaida terror threat in India, there is currently a concrete threat concentrated in the Goa region, where hundreds of travelers, including Israelis, gather for holidays at the end of the year," a ministry statement said.

The statement advised all Israeli citizens to refrain from vacationing in Goa and to avoid crowded tourist sites in the region at least until the end of December.

Noah Saban, 25, an Israeli who spent four months living in Goa, said on Wednesday that this was the peak season for tourists avoiding the cold winter months to bask in the warmth of southern India's beach climate.

"There are a lot of families from Israel and all over the world in Goa, and as soon as [al-Qaida] attacks, they will hurt a lot of people from all over the world, not just Israel," Saban told The Jerusalem Post. "This is a threat not just against Israel, but a threat against the world."

When asked if he thought that Israelis should heed the ministry's call to return to Israel, he responded by saying "the minute we show that we are afraid and run away, we show our weaknesses."

Saban said Israelis living in India travel on a seasonal cycle; they generally spend summers in the north and winters in the south. Thus, many Israelis congregate in Goa in the winter, as it is located on India's southwest coast.

"This is the height of the winter season," he said, attracting the largest number of Israeli tourists visiting the coastal get-away.

Goa's beautiful beaches and nightclubs have consistently been a popular destination for Western and Israeli tourists, especially youngsters who are looking for an escape after completing their military service. Every year, between October and March, nearly 400,000 Western and Israeli tourists travel to the beach town on India's southwestern coast.

Tourism really begins to pick up in November and culminates towards the end of December, during the height of the holiday season, when Goa's beaches are usually brimming with tourists. This renders them an ideal target for terror attacks during the winter months.

The Foreign Ministry's warning comes on the heels of a warning issued several weeks ago by Indian authorities, when word broke that al-Qaida was planning an attack on Goa over the holiday season. Earlier in the month, Indian intelligence reported that two al-Qaida terrorists had carried out practice runs of attacks in Goa.

The concern is that they could potentially return to execute an attack with the assistance of terrorist cells in India. After the warning initially surfaced, the airport in Goa was temporarily closed to prevent a terrorist hijacking; it has since reopened.

Nightclubs in Goa have been under special surveillance and hotel staff have been particularly alert in regards to spotting potential terrorists checking in to their establishments.

The attack is expected to be in a similar vein to the Bali attacks of 2002, in which terrorist operatives bombed a major tourist district of the Indonesian island, killing over 200, many of whom were foreign tourists on vacation.

"Those traveling to Goa in the next few weeks will be under serious threat of al-Qaida terrorist attacks" said the Division of Counter-Terrorism on Wednesday in its advisory.

Although the warning is strongly advised, it is not legally binding. "The Foreign Ministry would like to clarify that from the perspective of Israeli law, there is no travel ban on the aforementioned areas."

Although the Foreign Ministry stated that the decision to visit Goa is up to each individual's better judgment, they also acknowledged that each individual is responsible for their own actions.

The warning came just a week after Labor, Industry and Trade Minister Eli Yishai's four-day visit to India, where he promoted bilateral economic relations and also met with Israelis at Goa.

I'm returning to India again. Last winter spent time in Mumbai, Mysore, Bangalore, Kerala, Rishikesh, and Delhi.
What is the scene like in Goa? Is there a part where there are lots of parties and raves? What about quiet desolate
beaches? and seeing temples??
I will be traveling there with my girlfriend in Dec. and we plan to head South from Mumbai to Kerala.

delhi isn't really known as the place in india with big party scene, but i'm looking for a fairly large venue (500-1000 ppl) in delhi to throw a large event. my co-producers have a lot of aboveground clout, so the whole range of suggestions is appreciated. other than capacity, the only other requirement is open all night. extra points for spaces that have outdoor option.

thanks

Namaste Ji India friends

I'm headed to India in January to February and need to get some dental work done there. Probably Fillings, cleaning, a bit of gum disease and some cleaning. Looking for a good recommendation for a dentist. Delhi seems like the best bet although I'll spend time in Rishikesh and Prayag while I'm there.

Any personal experiences, recommendations or links?

I speak pretty good Hindi for a foreigner but naturally prefer an environoment where communication can be clear and precise.

Peace and thanks

Christmas and New Years in South India?

Hi~
I just moved to Tamil Nadu. I'm not Christian, but I would like to celebrate Christmas and New Years..anybody have an idea as to where I could do that? I live in Coimbatore, not too many Westerners in these parts, so if I stay here in town I'll be spending the holidays alone. I'm not really into the drinking scene, so Goa will not be on the itenerary. Was thinking perhaps Kerala?

Any input would be appreciated :o)

Eunuchs - A nuisance, although a social issue

This is an interesting article about a reporter's run-in with eunuchs in India:
http://www.latimes.com/news/printedition/la-fg-eunuchs7jun07,1,3843974.story?ctrack=1&cset=true

I feel kind of sad for their situation but I hate their ways...they make themselves a scourge and given the way they behave who will sympathize with them? Maybe that's what their "leaders" want? So they can be kept under control as outcasts.

I'm in Mumbai for 2 to 3 weeks, and would love to find out some stuff that's happening. It's my second trip here this month, so I'm slightly acclimated, and I do a lot of exploration, but more is better!

I live in San Francisco, and regularly live in random places, so I'm quite used to a variety of alternative events, so I'm pretty hard to shock :) Anything that really is really about what's happening locally is great. Music, art, events, nightlife, just meeting locals, travellers, etc.

advance thanks!

2009.07.22 SOLAR ECLIPSE ~ organizers note!

Thanks to http://people.tribe.net/webgrrl for bringing this to my attention:

http://www.clocktower.demon.co.uk/eclipse2009t
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_eclipse_of_2009-Jul-22

From Wikipedia:
"The solar eclipse that takes place on July 22, 2009 will be an total eclipse of the Sun with a magnitude of 1.080 that will be visible from a narrow corridor through northern India, eastern Nepal, southern China and the Pacific Ocean. Totality or near-totality will be visible in many cities such as Calcutta, Chandigarh, Chengdu, Chongqing, Delhi, Kathmandu, Hangzhou, Lucknow, Patna, Shanghai, Shimla, and Wuhan. A partial eclipse will be seen from the much broader path of the Moon's penumbra, including most of South East Asia and north-eastern Oceania."

This solar eclipse is the longest total solar eclipse that will occur in the twenty-first century. Totality will last for up to 6 minutes and 39 seconds, with the maximum eclipse occurring at 02:35:21 UTC about 100 km south of the Bonin Islands, southeast of Japan.

!!!!!!

My question to India organizers is, since this would be an ideal time for a party, what would be the ideal location? Many areas in the south asian eclipse corridor will be affected by bharsaat so the weather would be poor for a party, and the eclipse would not be visible. Guwahati appears to be near the southern edge of the umbra but may be within it. Darjiling is definitely within the path but Shillong is too far south. All the Himalchal Pradesh hillstations are too far north.

If Guwahati is within the umbra I would say that is the best bet, right?

Can anyone figure out if Guwahati is in the path?

Where's good to party, to stay, what I shouldn't miss seeing, what I absolutely have to do if I go there. I'll be fresh out of college, so money will probably be tight. Any input at all would be great, the more, the better. Thanks!

We are two long-time denizens of Black Rock City missing our first Burn in many years. We're going to be in Varanasi, India in early September so we decided to celebrate simultaneously with our friends on the Playa in...what is arguably...the original home of the burning man.

Where: Meet us immediately downstream (to the right as you're facing the Ganges) from the main burning ghat (Manikarnika Ghat). As we get closer in time we'll work out a way to be sure of identifying us but look for a man and a woman couple.

When: At dawn on September 2nd. Nevada is twelve hours behind Varanasi so dawn on the 3rd in Varnasi will be about sundown on the 2nd on the Playa.

Not sure how we'll fill the day but we can work that out as we get closer in time. We'll close with more fire at sunset at Dasashwamedh Ghat to watch the Bramhins perform their Ganga Fire Arti on the river. If we can get it together in time, we'll float and burn an effigy of our own!

Obviously, we're wide open to any input to celebrate in style.
