hi, i am planning to go to india - was originally going to be there already but then decided to put it off until january - it occured to me though that maybe i should experience a techno party there and was wondering what the xmas and new years parties are like - if they're something not to be missed or if it's super touristy and not worth going earlier to check out.....anyone know where i can find some really quality gatherings?

the mac daddy is hilltop in Vagator, northern Goa
it had its heyday but is still a good one to hit
the cover last season was 2000 rupees which all the hippies balked at cuz it used to be free entry
but for the past coupla years the dudes runnin this party haven't been playing the sympathy vote for the hippie travelers
so ultimately most people do pay that
i recommend finding a different party to spend the actually midnight hour at and show up to hilltop just before dawn
hilltop overnight has never been great...it's those sunrise and daylong sets that are super sweet.

get to goa a week beforehand and get in the mix with other travelers to hear about other parties
to get the scoop on all the parties mingle at these popular raver spots:
--shiva's place on spaghetti beach, not far from hill top in Vagator
    --9 Bar, little vagator
--curlie's in south anjuna are both places
    --piya guest house, arambol

p.s. the parties are also amazing on christmas, if you happen to be there that early

honestly, I would not recommend Goa if you want to hit a party to dance your ass off. Especially, Goa on NYE is too crowded with many people who have no clue about underground parties and respect for your space. Also, cops and local laws have ruined the party scene and parties can be shut down if the organizer does not grease the right palms.
Just my 2c; this does not mean you may not have a good time because it's so unpredictable.
I don't go to Goa expecting good parties or music...I just go to hang and meet people

the sweet lil parties do not get busted by the cops...cuz they're sweet lil parties
those are the ones you will never see posted online
you have to circulate in the scene to find them
even tho the big ones suck, the little ones are worth it
i don't go to the big ones anymore except during the day, once they've proven to not get busted by the cops...and i go for the spectacle only

there are also sweet underground parties in karnataka
but, again, you will never see them posted online.
once they're online that is a red flag for problems with police due to getting too big for the britches and discovered by the backsheesh greedy police
